630,000 more care beds required by 2030

A study produced by Newcastle University and published in in the BMC Geriatrics journal is predicting a large increase in the number of care home beds over the next 20 years because of the rising numbers of over-85’s in the UK.

In 2010 there were 2.6 million people over 80. By 2030 that is expected to rise to 4.8 million, making it the fastest growing age group, say researchers at Newcastle University’s Institute for Ageing and Health. An extra 630,000 beds will have to be found between now and 2030 if the care system is to cope with demand. That is an 82 per cent rise on today.

The Daily Express has produced a more detailed analysis of the report.
