BUPA have today released a report "Who Cares?" examining the potential effects on the care home sector in England if local councils continue to pay fees at levels which are below the costs of looking after older people in care homes.
The report predicts that if the current decline in fee rates continue, care homes will close and over the next decade up to 100,000 frail older people could end up being admitted to hospital or left without proper support in their own homes.
In the report, Bupa calls for five steps to avoid this happening, including council leaders ring-fencing the £2 billion the government allocated for social care; and taking care home cost inflation into account when setting fees.
